home-made costumes are best

Skeleton GirlMy skeleton costume
I went to a Halloween party with my friend Chewie - it was an alumni/fundraiser party for med students. We walked in, and immediately felt way too old -- everyone in their 20s. But as we found a corner to hang out and drink/eat and people watch, it got interesting with the costumes. Including one woman dressed as a shepherdess -- Mary -- and her little portable lamb. It was sort of cool, sort of trying too hard. Not to mention, she had to walk around with a lamb doll and staff all night!

Speaking of costumes, I made my own in about an hour. I was going to be a litter bug, then changed my mind and decided to make a skeleton. I cut out the bones for the legs and the rib cage, and scotch-taped it to my clothing. It worked out well. And, I was the only skeleton there at the party! I did see "Death" and he had a skeletal looking hand, but it clearly wasn't a homemade costume. Chewie went as a black widow spider -- she made a bunch of legs and attached it to her black clothing - with a nice touch of a felt red heart on her t-shirt.

Although we were initially a bit bummed out about not recognizing anyone at the party, we finally found some people our age to hang out with, which was fun. The only downside, driving home that night -- a 15 minute ride turned into an hour-plus nightmare. I could nap, but poor Chewie had to stay awake. I got to bed by 1:45am. And this was after I spent the previous night going to a movie (The Departed), and then the following night went to the American Ballet Theater. What a busy, social week it's been!
