aging rockers

Sunday night, I headed out to Jones Beach with Chewie to check out Motley Crue and Aerosmith. Splurged a bit on tickets -- basically, I got a decent deal from a coworker who needed to get rid of the tix when her friends backed out. It was a beautiful night to be at an outdoor concert. The venue was stunning.

Surprisingly enough, Motley Crue started on time -- so on time that I was still eating outside the venue and missed a few songs. But after I got in, I wasn't too worried. It's exactly as Neighborsman described the concert would be like, with fireworks, smoke machines, women dressed in s&m outfits, and loud music. The band tried almost too hard to be outrageous and titillating, in an 80's sort of way. Fun but I don't think the band was amazing. Too much flash, not enough musicianship. It was incredibly amusing to watch these two guys standing near us, who were, like totally pumped man, like totally stoked, for the Crue. They were gesturing wildly with the songs, and having a great time. Oh, and a special treat, these fans did their best air guitar at the end!

On the other hand, Aerosmith had a simple set, and just really rocked hard. They showed how it could be done, and why they're still an amazing band. I was really impressed with how good they sounded. I wish they had sung Janie Got a Gun, but they did a lot of other great songs, and they played some fantastic blues-inspired songs too.

I remember an interview with Steve Tyler some years ago. He commented that in the 80s that they always played these huge venues where they were stoned, the crowd was stoned, and they sounded like crap but no one really cared. He compared this to the "modern" Aerosmith which he said was pretty much substance free, had a much better and tighter sound - and played to crowds of a couple thousand at most. They've come back up in the world since then. I actually had tickets to see them several months ago here in OKC but Tyler got sick and the concert was cancelled. Damn.

But speaking of aging rockers - Foghat is playing at the State Fair on Sunday. Free with fair admission. Can't wait to see what that will be like...
