Doc PC and I went to an excellent Cold Play concert on Tuesday night at MSG. I don't actually listen to their albums a lot, but after hearing the band play live, I think I like them even better now.
Granted, we were up in nosebleed section, but it really didn't matter because we were in the front row, in a balcony overlooking the crowd, which had an amazing vibe. The lighting for the show was fantastic - I don't think I've ever seen a show where there was so much focus on aiming light at the audience. Either the first or second song, all these big yellow air balloons came down from the ceiling and people threw them around -- made a lovely visual effect because the song lyrics talked about "yellow".
The lead singer, Chris Martin, has a very low key, self-deprecating personality -- made a number of jokes at his and the band's expense. "Last year, we played in NY probably mankind's worst possible concert, so we're trying to make up for it..." and so on.
I didn't realize Chris Martin was a big supporter of Free Trade, but I was impressed. There were many, many Oxfam volunteers lying in wait to sign you up for their petition.
But to the point of the title, there was a lovely 2 acoustic songs tribute to Johnny Cash, the man in black. Wish I could remember what the first song was, but they did a fast, almost rockabilly version of "Ring of Fire". I liked how the band went from very anthem, U2-esque rocking style with lighting and poses, to this intimate, acoustic set where they stood shoulder to shoulder and played these songs.
