culture vultures

So it's been about 4 dates now with HR skiguy -- I really need a much better nickname for him. Until I come up with a better one, I think I'll call him Bollywood Boy -- because he was an extra last year in some scenes for a Bollywood film starring some of the biggest Indian actors, including Khan. We actually went and checked out the dvd to see if we could find him -- we could spot him in the background of several courthouse scenes - kind of a blink and you miss him.

Anyway, BBoy and I went to the MoMA on Friday night -- it's free to the public and open until 8pm. But with my corporate membership, we got access to an exhibit that wasn't open to the public just yet -- about art inspired by comic books called Comic Abstraction. I really enjoyed it. I think my favorite two exhibits were the one of all the quote balloons near the ceiling; and the Tom & Jerry inspired dark room with music playing and a mouse hole just like in the show. There's an online version of it you can look at. And for $25, you can get a great 3 course prix fixe meal in one of the MoMA cafes. Definitely a lovely, date-worthy place.

Sunday was all about being outdoors, skiing in the Poconos at Camelback. It's a small mountain, but Chewie and I found enough interesting features on the trails. We spent most of our time on one side that had a lot of fluffy powder and mogul-like bumps. It actually snowed several times during the day so that added to the fun. And it was nice not to have it be so far away (like Killington) -- we were on the slopes by 10, and back home by 6. It was good to be outdoors - and I'm really happy to have friends who enjoy such fun activities.

Goodness knows I needed a fun distraction as the word of the health front is not good for the family. My grandfather suffered another stroke and has garbled speech and can't eat by himself. I really hope he stabilizes and doesn't get worse, but I fear that this is the start of him going more downhill. Between that and my mom's cousin-in-law dealing with surgery for ovarian cancer, not to mention my dad having to do his regular 4-6 month checkups and possibly doing a new test...it's just hard not to worry. I know it's out of my hands, so I'll try to think positive thoughts.

Next time I post, I'll be in that cultural hotbed -- Viva Las Vegas! I'm off to a conference there tomorrow afternoon through Friday to learn all about the latest in social new media (blogs, wikis, rss feeds, etc). Should be a blast, especialy as I'm staying in The Venetian!

Have fun at the Venetian. Are you going to take a Gondola ride? Good luck at the card tables!

The Ventian is a really nice hotel. We had a family trip to Vegas last summer. Vegas is a really pretty city at night. Good luck gambling should you decided to take in that vice. I had a sweet "beginner's luck" run at Blackjack, winning $500... and then reality struck and I gave half of it back. D'oh!

I'm a bit of a skinflint - it hurts to even put down just a quarter or two! I've been in Las Vegas twice and managed not to gamble very much. Maybe I'll get luck this time!
