Happy Thanksgiving!

dan tat - egg custard tart

I had a very untraditional Thanksgiving dinner -- well, I didn't have any turkey at all. Spent yesterday (Thursday) having a wonderful buffet breakfast and catching up with a college classmate who will be having her second child next week! Then I raced back home to have lunch (I didn't eat anything because I was too full) with my Gong Gong.

And then my parents and I went to see the new Andy Lau film, Battle of Wits. The battle scenes are pretty incredible, and there's an interesting showing of how war affects the common little guy -- peasants -- but overall, I felt that the story, over and over was hitting me on the head with the message that war is terrible. It's about a pacifist warrior who comes to the aid of a small kingdom being besieged by a much bigger kingdom's army and how they defeat the other guys, but at great personal cost. It's based on a Japanese manga. Not the greatest movie in the world -some dumb subplots, but still an entertaining way to spend the evening.

And then last night, my aunt and I went had some traditional wonton mein (soup noodles with shrimp dumplings), fried fish meatballs with this great clam sauce, and a side of choi sum. Meanwhile, my parents had a lot of meat and other incredible dishes at Yung Kee, the best Chinese restaurant in the world.

We were actually at Yung Kee the night before -- and it is the greatest restaurant and you can either spend a lot, or just a little. We've been going to this place for years, especially my mother, aunt, grandparents and so on. My grandfather started his business on a street just a round the corner from Yung Kee's original restaurant. The night before, we were there and had a small dish of their roast goose, bbq park, Gailan (called Chinese broccoli but no relation to the Italian veggie) with sausage, Yang Chow fried rice, tofu with tiny dried fish, and for dessert, wonderful flaky tiny Dan Tat (egg custard in pastry shell). Feast your eyes on these photos!
