I have to figure out a way to have good settings for photos I snap with my phone. We had the perfect breakfast/lunch in Williamsburg on Saturday morning. We happened upon a Polish diner that looked promising. And we ended up having pierogis (meatless, just with the cheese and a little sauer kraut seasoning), potato pancakes with the sour cream and apple sauce, a blueberry blintz, and apple fritters. It was amazing to eat.
And our all carbs/starch diet didn't end. That night, we wandered in from the rain into a small, unassuming Colombian restaurant. I ordered a tamale for starters -- and it was different than the ones I've eaten in Tex-Mex restaurants. Only needed one -- it was the size of a paperback book, and wrapped in a banana leaf. It was stuffed with pork, potato, a little carrot. The owner had this amazing homemade hot sauce relish that wasn't oily -- it had the perfect amount of heat. The tamale really reminded me of a Chinese zhong. Then, I had rice, beans and a grilled, pounded pork with a potato and fried cassava root. Mama had the chicken version, and my aunt had steamed fish -- huge steaks -- and before the fish came, they served her a fish broth in which she added a quarter of avocado, a lime and rice. All chased down with a wonderfully smooth cup of Colombian coffee.
Ahhhh....all I can say is, I'm happy I got to explore some new restaurants with the family, because it's not nearly as fun to do this solo.
